Blood type O least vulnerable to Covid; A, AB at most risk

Blood type O least vulnerable to Covid; A, AB at most risk”

Interestingly, the researchers found that among those who tested positive for the virus, a lower percentage had type O blood, while a higher percentage had blood types A, B, or AB. The findings also showed that blood groups "A" and "AB" associated with an increased risk of severe clinical outcomes of COVID-19 infection.

"We have the advantage of a strong control group - Denmark is a small, ethnically homogenous country with a public health system and a central registry for lab data - so our control is population-based, giving our findings a strong foundation", Torben added.

In two of such researches, the scientists have found out that a person's blood type can play a very important role in one's vulnerability towards the novel coronavirus.

People with type A blood, however, accounted for 44.4% of the infected patients, the study found, despite making up 42.4% of the untested group. Their study matched these results against a control group 2.2 million people in the general population.

"A higher proportion of Covid-19 patients with blood group A or AB required mechanical ventilation and had a longer ICU stay compared with patients with blood group O or B, "they wrote".

Researchers also found the blood type A or AB group had longer stays in the intensive care unit, a median of 13.5 days, compared to the other group with blood type O or B who had a median of 9 days. A study published in July looking at patients in five major hospitals in the state of MA found that people with blood type O were less likely to test positive for COVID-19 than those with other blood types.

Types A and AB also needed a sort of dialysis that helps the kidneys filter blood without putting too much pressure on the heart more often than their counterparts.

"Individuals with O blood type are between 9-18% percent less likely than individuals with other blood types to have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the data", a company statement said at the time.

People with blood group O positive can donate blood only to people with positive blood groups like A+, B+, O+, AB+.

The second study examined data from 95 critically ill people who were hospitalized with Covid-19 in Vancouver, Canada.

The second research is based on almost 95 people from Vancouver, Canada who had tested positive for the virus.

Your blood type may predict how severely you'd be affected by Covid-19, should you catch infection.
