Coronavirus Canada Updates: 200 schools on COVID-19 alert or outbreak”

The number of active cases in the province is now 2,836 up from 2,738 on Thursday.

Across Alberta, there are 332 new cases and no new deaths linked to COVID-19 in the last 24 hours.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta's chief medical officer of health, revealed at a press conference on Friday the test positivity rate in the province is at 2.24 per cent.

On Friday, the city of Calgary was moved onto the watch list as it now 686 active cases, which is 50.9 per 100,000 people, Hinshaw said.

At her Tuesday update, Dr. Deena Hinshaw said the increase in hospitalizations is being driven by the outbreak at the Misericordia as well as an outbreak at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary. "The fewer people you have, the lower the risk of exposure or transmission".

Alberta reported an outbreak of COVID-19 at Canadian Natural Resources' Horizon site.

Right now 117 people are in hospital with the disease, 11 of them in intensive care.

South zone: 202 cases, up from 191 cases.

Unknown: 12 cases, down from 16 cases.

Across the region, there are 22 active cases, one death, and 349 recovered cases of the infection.

All schools in the RMWB are also off the provincial watch list for COVID-19, including Elsie Yanik School as it did not have a new case of the illness in the last 28 days. Sixty-one schools have now seen in school transmission, with two-thirds of those resulting in only one new case. Eight patients and two staff were diagnosed with COVID-19.

Canada's National Advisory Committee on Immunizations is encouraging all Canadians over the age of six months to get a flu shot, saying vaccination is one of the most effective preventive measures you can take to avoid getting sick. "Last year, there was 40 per cent of people wanting to get the flu shot, this year it's 57 per cent".
