London shifts into 2nd-highest virus risk tier as cases rise”

Tier 2, "High" means no mixing between households indoors, the rule of six applies outdoors and the on-trade must shut at 10pm, while Tier 3, "Very High" is the strictest level and completely prevents households mixing in any area, pubs and bars must close if they do not serve hot meals and people may be prevented from travelling in or out of the affected area.

Health Secretary Hancock explained: "Infection rates are on a steep upward path with the number of cases doubling every 10 days".

Under Tier 2, households are also barred from mixing in pubs and restaurants and people should aim to reduce use of public transport.

Speaking earlier at City Hall, London mayor Sadiq Khan had indicated the tougher measures were on the way because there is "simply no other option" as he warned of a hard winter ahead.

Mr Khan told the London Assembly: "Final conversations with ministers are ongoing around this as we meet - but I expect ministers to make an announcement to Parliament later today". The move comes after the city's mayor, Sadiq Khan, said that the capital had reached a "critical moment" in its fight against Covid-19.

"Nobody wants to see more restrictions - but this is deemed to be necessary in order to protect Londoners' lives by myself, London council leaders and by ministers", he said. "We all need to play our part in getting the virus under control once again". The Liverpool City Region has been placed in the "Very High" level since Wednesday. There is also guidance against travelling in and out of the area.

Under Prime Minister Johnson's new three-tiered social distancing and curfew system, those couples living apart in Tier 2 (medium) and Tier 3 (high) zones will find themselves prohibited from having sex at each other's homes.

As of Saturday, Londoners will be prohibited from mixing with other households in homes and other indoor settings.
