Maple Leafs Sign Joe Thornton To One-Year Deal

Maple Leafs Sign Joe Thornton To One-Year Deal”

Joe Thornton surprised many Sharks fans when after 15 seasons in San Jose, he elected to sign with the Toronto Maple Leafs on a one-year contract.

Thornton, a six-time all star and the victor of the Hart Memorial Trophy as league MVP in 2006, is a veteran of 1,636 career NHL regular-season games between the Boston Bruins and San Jose Sharks. Thornton is a six-time All-Star and won the Hart Trophy and Art Ross Trophy in 2006.

Thornton was originally drafted from the Soo Greyhounds (OHL) by the Boston Bruins with the first overall selection in the 1997 NHL Draft.

Thornton's deal does not include a substantial number of performance bonuses. In 179 playoff games he has added another 133 points.

The six-time All Star has skated in 1,636 career National Hockey League regular season games playing for the Boston Bruins and San Jose Sharks.

Thornton is the second Ontario-born veteran to sign a league-minimum deal with the Leafs in this free agency, joining Jason Spezza.

Thornton's leadership would have been helpful for a young Sharks team trying to bounce back from a dismal 2019-20 season, but Toronto potentially will be a stronger contender for a Stanley Cup, which the 41-year-old likely covets before he hangs up his skates.
