Michigan governor disturbed by Trump criticism and 'lock her up' chants

Michigan governor disturbed by Trump criticism and 'lock her up' chants”

"This is exactly the rhetoric that has put me, my family, and other government officials' lives in danger while we try to save the lives of our fellow Americans", Whitmer said in response to Trump's Saturday rally.

McDaniel claimed the chant was spurred by the frustration of MI residents over being locked down for months by Whitmer's restrictions to fight the coronavirus.

"It is wrong. It's got to end".

The Saturday night barbs, which came at an event in MI, included Donald Trump criticising Whitmer's stringent response to the coronavirus, calling her "dishonest" and appearing to make light of a foiled plot to kidnap the Democratic governor.

At the MI rally Saturday, Trump said of Whitmer, "I guess they said she was threatened and she blamed me".

The President spoke for about an hour and a half, focusing heavily on his opponents, and calling out Governor Gretchen Whitmer, saying she needs to reopen businesses and schools. The schools' have to be open.

"They said she was threatened", Trump told the crowd.

Pressed on the President's amplification of his supporters' "lock her up" chants the morning after, Lara Trump piggybacked off of her father-in-law's talking point that his Department of Justice "actually thwarted this attack against" the MI governor.

Since the men behind the attack have been arrested, Whitmer has accused Trump of using rhetoric that sows division and hatred.

"First of all, the president and his Federal Bureau of Investigation foiled this plot", the RNC chairwoman said told ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos.

Forty minutes later into Trump's Saturday night rally, the president again railed against Michigan's lockdown measures and sparked the crowd to resume the "lock her up" chants.

"He wasn't doing anything, I don't think, to provoke people to threaten this woman at all", she told CNN's State of the Union on Sunday.

But Trump's senior adviser and daughter-in-law Lara Trump dismissed the rally's chants as part of the "fun" setting. It's a fun, light atmosphere.

"The president has to realize that words of the president of the United States weigh a ton". "And in our political dialogue, to inject fear tactics into it â€" especially a woman governor and her family â€" is so irresponsible", she said on ABC's "This Week". "The biggest antidote to his poison is the vote", she said.
