Phase 2 trial of Sputnik V may resume in India soon

Phase 2 trial of Sputnik V may resume in India soon”

According to The Lancet, there are now 42 vaccines for COVID-19 in clinical trials.

Russian Federation has registered a second vaccine - EpiVacCorona, while a third vaccine has received permission to conduct first and second stages of clinical trials at medical facilities in Novosibirsk, St Petersburg and Kirov.

However, so far, the sovereign wealth fund has not signed a pact for manufacturing of the vaccine in India and are in talks with several Indian vaccine makers for production.

Sputnik V, the world's first registered vaccine developed by Russian Federation against Covid-19, has been approved for conducting an adaptive phase 2 and 3 trial in India. The vaccine uses two adenovirus vectors (rAd26 and rAd5) against SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Vaccine misinformation expert Professor Heidi Larson said she feared that people's concerns about vaccine safety were not being addressed, which could result in them not taking it. The Indian Express told The Indian that once a vaccine has been present one should strive for herd immunity.

Speaking on the accessibility conundrum of COVID-19 vaccine in HEAL-Thy Samvaad, Dr J L Meena, Joint Director, NHA, said, "Of course, to have a check on the upsurge of COVID-19 infection, the vaccine is quintessential". Hopefully, 20-25 crore population will get a vaccine next year. "Thereafter, we will produce more and more dosages by the permission of the government", added Dr Jadav.

The UAE has authorised the emergency use of the vaccine as part of the country's measures to protect health workers in close contact with COVID-19 patients and ensure their safety, and that it was fully aligned with the regulations and laws that allow a faster review of licensing procedures.

The eastern city of Jiaxin's center for disease control and prevention (CDC) said in a statement on WeChat that two doses of the vaccine candidate, called CoronaVac, will cost 200 yuan (RM 124) per dose and that vaccinations for key groups including medical professionals have begun. For this, we need to prioritise the accessibility depending upon the vulnerability of the populace and take some strong action within the time limit.

The proposal also includes a plan to track the latest vaccine stock position, temperature at storage facility, geotag health centres, and maintain facility-level dashboard for delivery across India.
