Pompeo Names US Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues”

The United States has accused Beijing of suppressing Tibetans and violating their human rights.

'We believe Tibet's future will be better.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday announced that State Department official Robert Destro would assume the additional post, which has been vacant since the start of President Donald Trump's term in 2017.

The US remains concerned with the Chinese repression of the Tibetan community, including the lack of meaningful autonomy, the deteriorating human rights situation in Tibetan areas, and severe restrictions on Tibetans' religious freedom and cultural traditions within China, he said.

Destro would also work to protect the religious, cultural and linguistic identity of Tibetans and to improve their human rights, Pompeo said. They will push for the protection of their human rights.

Asked about restrictions that bar foreigners from going to Tibet outside of government tours, Wu Yingjie, the Communist Party Secretary of the Tibet Autonomous Region, said officials believed the region's environment was too risky for foreigners to travel independently.

The US enacted the Rescriptional Access to Tibet Act (Mutual Access Law in Tibet), 2018. This relates to the entry of Chinese officials who prevent foreigners from entering Tibet.

"I, on behalf of the 16th Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile and the Tibetans in Tibet and around the world would like to express my earnest gratitude to the U.S. government and congratulate you on being appointed as the new Special Coordinator for the Tibetan Issues", said Pema Jungney Speaker of the 16th Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile.

At a Thursday press briefing in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa, regional chairman Che Dalha said China had "never restricted foreigners' entry into Tibet".

"As the vision of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and the policy adopted democratically by Central Tibetan Administration; the Tibetan people, we are seeking genuine autonomy within the framework of the People's Republic of China serving the interest of both China and Tibet through Middle Way Approach".

Since a year ago, the Trump administration stepped up criticisms of China's handling of Tibet especially the issue of appointment of the Dalai Lama's successor.

"Special Coordinator Destro will engage Tibetan leaders and global partners and experts to address these issues".
