Renault's Mégane eVision concept offers a look at its future EV lineup

Renault's Mégane eVision concept offers a look at its future EV lineup”

With a 26.8 kilowatt-hour battery at its core, Spring Electric is hardly expected to set roads on fire but at a time when affordability is a key factor that determines the fate of EVs for masses, it could well be a hot seller once officially launched.

Slated for a United Kingdom introduction in 2022, the production version of the Megane eVision will enter the marketplace in the B-segment.

Renault says that the new Megane eVision is going to reinvent the compact hatchback once it enters production late next year.

At an online press conference held on October 15, Luca De Meo, Groupe Renault chief executive, said: "Thanks to our brand-new Alliance platform CMF-EV, we broke the rules of size, use, design and energy efficiency to imagine the Mégane eVision show-car".

"Mégane eVision reinvents Mégane, and Renault reinvents Renault. It is a versatile and practical city auto", Renault said.

Compared to the current-generation Megane, the eVision, in concept form at least, appears to take the stance of an SUV rather than a traditional hatchback, standing some 58mm taller (1447mm vs 1505mm).

As for length, the concept vehicle measures in 149mm shorter (4359mm vs 4210mm) than the current-generation Megane and 14mm narrower (1814mm vs 1800mm) with a 31mm-longer wheelbase (2669 vs 2700mm).

"It previews Renault's future family of electric cars combining character, efficiency and passenger comfort". There's some hints of Renault, unsurprisingly, with the basic interior created to avoid unnecessary expense.

The new electric auto would be the first built on the CMF-EV platform, or vehicle architecture, developed jointly by Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi.

For motivation, the Spring's front-mounted electric motor serves up 44 hp (33 kW) and 125 Nm of torque, which is good for a top speed of 125 km/h.

The Renault Megane eVision contains a 60kWh battery pack under the floor and a single 160kW e-motor driving the front wheels - a power figure Renault claims is one of the most powerful engines on sale - and a range of around 450km.

The definitive model for production will be unveiled in 2021, Renault added.

Renault Australia has sold 4322 vehicles overall so far this year ending September.
