Zverev, Bautista Agut labor to reach Cologne semis”

Nearly two years later, the German has finally won the second title after that massive success (the first came in Geneva last year), beating Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 19 minutes to become an inaugural Cologne champion.

He handed a break back with consecutive double-faults but secured the first set in the next game and moved 4-2 up in the second to break Auger-Aliassime's resistance. "As a player you know you're happy when your shots are going where you want them to go, and that's really how I felt today".

"This is our first final, but probably not the last", said the 21-year-old Canadian after he defeated the Spaniard, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, to reach his third final of the year.

"In my mind I knew it was goint to be a hard match", said Auger-Aliassime.

Top-seeded Alexander Zverev advanced to the semifinals by beating Lloyd Harris of South Africa 6-4, 3-6, 6-0.

Auger-Aliassime, 20, overcame second seed Roberto Bautista Agut in the semi-final but failed to repeat his performance against Zverev.

"I think playing him will be a good match, a good battle, and I'll try to get my revenge after a heartbreaking loss at last year's Davis Cup", Auger-Aliassime said.

At the Sardegna Open, Marco Cecchinato routed Danilo Petrovic 6-1 6-0 and will face Laslo Djere in the final after Lorenzo Musetti retired in the third set with a right elbow injury.

The seventh Zverev will then face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Zverev is looking for his first title of the year and his third in his native Germany after victories at the Munich clay court tournament in 2017 and 2018.
