COVID-19 | Andhra Pradesh reports fewer than 4,000 new cases”

Paul, who is also the chief of an expert panel coordinating efforts to tackle the pandemic in the country, in an interview to PTI said that once the COVID-19 vaccine is available, there will be enough resources to deliver as well as make it accessible to the citizens. "Things can happen and we are still learning about the virus", Paul noted.

"With no lockdown, the pandemic would have hit India very hard, with a peak load of over 140 lakh cases arriving in June". Otherwise we will see a sharp rise in infections. Given our lack of preparedness back then, the healthcare system would have been overwhelmed, leading to many additional deaths.

"Projections show that without the lockdown, active symptomatic cases would have peaked in June at 140 lakh overwhelming our hospitals; total symptomatic cases would have reached 204 lakh by February 2021 as against 106 lakh now estimated and deaths would have been over 26 lakh by August-end as against the current 1.1 lakh as of October", Vidyasagar said. The health workers in the states will be given guidelines regarding timely diagnosis and further actions to be taken.

On Saturday, the Health Ministry data said 65,24,595 have been discharged, 7,95,087 are now active while 1,12,998 lost the battle against the pandemic.

East Godavari's daily new cases came down compared to previous weeks, but still continues to report the highest tallies.

The committee also said that 30 percent of the population in India has already developed immunity to the virus. Cumulatively, the city has reported 3,07,540 infections, 3,525 deaths, 2,39,579 discharges including 3,845 on Sunday and 64,435 active cases comprising 365 in ICU.

- Relaxation in protective measures can lead to a significant rise: Up to 26 lakh infections within a month. People with co-morbidities need to be extra cautious.

The mandate of the committee was to create an evidence-based mathematical model for the pandemic after taking inputs from various groups working in the domain in the country and use it to analyse past events and future trajectories of the pandemic.

If all the protocols are adhered to, the Covid-19 pandemic can be controlled by early next year with minimal active symptomatic infections by February-end, says a committee of experts appointed by the Department of Science and Technology (DST). Only the headline has been changed.
