Diplomats from China and Taiwan clashed in Fiji

Diplomats from China and Taiwan clashed in Fiji”

He told the event to the Guardian.

When the pair were asked to leave, they assaulted an official, putting him in hospital. China says Taiwan is one of its provinces, with no right to full ties with foreign countries.

Tseng asserted that China was guilty of "brutal and irrational actions to damage peace and rationality" and that tensions between the two countries have "never been so serious". " ChinaTaiwan is "one" internationally".

Beijing denied Taiwan's allegation today, claiming that the Taiwanese officials were "acting provocatively" and "injuring a Chinese diplomat".

"We have expressed our grave concern to the Fijian side ..."

The Chinese government has reportedly called on Fiji to hold Taiwan accountable for the incident.

Meanwhile, the director-general of the Foreign Ministry's Asia-Pacific Affairs Department, Larry Tseng, says that Taiwan's missions overseas have been placed on high-alert.

The Communist Party of China issued a statement through its embassy in Fiji claiming that the Chinese attackers, not the Taiwanese victim, was injured, and largely condemning not the violence, but Taiwan's routine reception to celebrate its national day.

Taiwan's Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Zeng Hu Jin confirmed the accident on Monday.

Taipei said the Chinese diplomats were taken away by the police and "falsely claimed" that they had been attacked.

Chinese officials responded by accusing Taiwanese officials of assault and filing a complaint with Fiji's police force. Taiwan media reported that the matter has been directed at Fiji authorities and that Taiwan officials are helping.

Chinese diplomats are increasingly assertive overseas.

Wang Ting-yu, a Taiwanese legislator and member of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, said he was "shocked and outraged".

In a briefing on Monday, China's foreign ministry revealed its officials were aware of details from inside the function, including a cake emblazoned with Taiwan's flag.

Fiji switched its diplomatic recognition to Beijing in 1975.

Larry Tseng, the head of the ministry's East Asia and Pacific affairs department, said the Chinese were trying to work out whether any Fijian politicians were present at the event.

The altercation in Fiji comes at a time of high tension between the two sides, with Beijing ramping up diplomatic and military pressure since the 2016 election of Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen.

Zhao reiterated that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory.

Exacerbated tensions between Taipei and Beijing previously erupted in the Pacific Forums.

A Taiwanese delegate invited to the meeting was then expelled from the Chinese delegation.

Sino-Taiwanese relations have been the most tense in decades.

A number of opposition lawmakers and prominent businessmen, including two ministers from the Fijian government, Fisheries Minister Semi Korailavsau and Assistant Youth and Sports Minister Alipet Nagata, and opposition leader Siteni Rabuka, attended the event.

Fiji has always been a staunch China ally and was the first Pacific island nation to forge diplomatic relations with Beijing in 1975.
