Top China Editor Says 'Common Sense' for U.S. to Fear Detentions”

China has communicated the threat to the White House on numerous occasions and through multiple channels, including the United States embassy in Beijing, according to The Wall Street Journal.

At the time of her arrest, Beijing warned the United States that it would detain an American in China if Tang were not allowed to return to China, the Wall Street Journal reported.

"The difference is, " Keane continued, "we're arresting spies".

A spokesman for the US embassy in Beijing said Monday morning that he had no comment on the suggestion that Americans in China could be subject to arbitrary detention.

Chinese diplomats have been issuing warnings to their American counterparts that if the Justice Department continues its prosecutions of P.L.A. -linked researchers, US citizens in China could run into legal troubles, people familiar with the matter told the Journal.

The American actions at the time were believed to have followed several months of concerns voiced by the Trump administration that Chinese diplomats were allegedly recruiting their researchers to gather cutting-edge scientific research from USA universities. When the State Department ordered the closure of the Chinese consulate in Houston, the department also ordered China to remove all P.L.A. -connected researchers from the US, the Journal reported in August.

China's Foreign Ministry responded at the time by stating that their diplomats "have never engaged in activities incompatible with their status".

China has threatened United States officials that it may detain American citizens for visiting Taiwan, a region that Beijing calls a renegade province.

On Sept. 14, the U.S. State Department issued a travel advisory for China with a reminder to Americans that, "The PRC government arbitrarily enforces local laws, including by carrying out arbitrary and wrongful detentions and through the use of exit bans".

The spokesperson cautioned that individuals and their family members who are not directly involved in these cited proceedings might find themselves "subject to an exit ban".

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, John Demers, Head of US Justice Department's national security division said, "If China wants to be seen as one of the world's leading nations, it should respect the rule of law and stop taking hostages".
