US House speaker sets 48-hour deadline to approve relief package

US House speaker sets 48-hour deadline to approve relief package”

Pelosi says she is still hoping to find "common ground", but she has already given a 48-hour deadline to the administration if they want to get a relief package passed before the presidential election on November 3.

The U.S. Senate's scheduled vote for a coronavirus stimulus bill is a "stunt" by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Sen. Democrats in mid-September blocked similar legislation.

"We don't have agreement in the language yet, but I'm hopeful", the speaker said on ABC's "This Week."

The Speaker warned that if a deal is not reached by election day, economic calamity and further suffering would befall the nation before a new administration and Congress will be able to act in 2021. But the pair still had differences on a plan for testing and contact tracing and "measures to address the virus' disproportionate impact on communities of color". Last week, some Democrats in the House called on Pelosi to accept the White House's latest offer.

It's not clear what will happen if the White House and Pelosi do not resolve their policy disputes in the next two days.

"Decisions must be made by the White House in order to demonstrate that the Administration is serious about reaching a bipartisan agreement that provides for Americans with the greatest needs during the pandemic", Hammill said. "Instead of recognizing the need for a strategic plan, they have changed words including "shall" to "may, ' "requirement" to 'recommendation, ' and 'strategic plan" to 'strategy'".

"That depends on the administration", she added.

Pelosi told her colleagues that she hopes to find common ground and is optimistic that an agreement could be reached before the election.

Negotiations between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on a second stimulus package are expected to continue today.

During a virtual conference hosted by the Milken Institute on Wednesday, Mnuchin said that it would be hard for the White House and Democrats to reach a deal on a comprehensive COVID-19 relief package before the presidential election, as the two sides were still far apart on certain issues.

However, McConnell did not mention any provision of another round of $1,200 direct payments to families and individuals who received stimulus checks under the HEALS Act, Business Insider reports.
