Early release for murderer who used narwhal tusk to foil London attack

Early release for murderer who used narwhal tusk to foil London attack”

A convicted murderer who helped thwart an attack on London Bridge will be considered for parole 10 months early.

Steven Gallant, 41, jailed for 17 years in 2005 for the murder of an ex-firefighter in Hull, was on day release attending a prisoner rehabilitation event when he came across attacker Usman Khan.

According to Sky News, Gallant has reportedly expressed remorse for the slaying of Barrie Jackson, who was beaten to death outside a pub.

The Ministry of Justice said the Queen had employed the little used "Royal Prerogative of Mercy" which will see 10 months knocked off his sentence and mean he is eligible to go in front of parole board next June, which would be expected to rubber-stamp his freedom.

The Ministry of Justice said the Queen was advised to grant the pardon as a result of Gallant's "exceptionally fearless actions", the Mirror reported.

Convicted terrorist Khan, 28, killed Jack Merritt, 25, and Saskia Jones, 23, at Fishmongers Hall next to London Bridge during a conference that aimed to help rehabilitate prisoners.

Mr. Merritt's father David was quoted by the Daily Mirror to say: "Steve fully deserves this pardon, or reduction in sentence".

"He was very close to Jack and he turned his life around and reformed".

"I have mixed emotions - but what happened at London Bridge goes to show the reality that people can change".

Afterwards, Gallant was cited as saying he "didn't hesitate" to confront Khan.

Merritt, who was a course coordinator for Learning Together, had mentored Gallant while he was behind bars.

"I could tell something was wrong and had to help".

Gallant described the young man as a "role model and friend".

"It is right I was handed a severe penalty for my actions. Bettering yourself becomes one of the few things you can do while reducing the existing burden on society", the Guardian reported.

When asked about his heroics on 29 November 2019, Gallant said in a statement that he just had to act.

Several other people were injured. Khan was stood [sic] within the lobby with two giant knives in his palms. "He was a clear danger to all".
