Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Daniel James and Juan Mata took their chance

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Daniel James and Juan Mata took their chance”

Van de Beek came off the bench as struggling United overturned an early deficit to rout Newcastle United 4-1 in Premier League action on Saturday.

However, speaking after the match, Solskajer sought to give an insight into his selection, insisting he can only pick 11 players in a match.

Fans were curious why the Dutch talent didn't get to start the fixture but in the end, he played a role in the 4-1 victory.

"Of course, I get questions about our players when they play and why they don't play", he said when asked if Mata needs to start more regularly. Juan has definitely done so. He is so professional and everyone in the team knows his qualities. Dan has incredible speed on the counter and today he showed more positivity, he trusted himself. "There is a long way to go, we have to improve", he told Sky Sports.

Solskjaer resisted calls to start Van de Beek following United's 6-1 drubbing at the hands of Tottenham prior to the worldwide break - the Dutch midfielder replacing Daniel James 14 minutes from the end at St James' Park.

The game at St James' Park looked to be heading for a draw until United's Portuguese midfielder Fernandes struck four minutes from time, with two more late strikes putting a shine on the scoreboard for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side.

Chadwick also hailed Rashford and Maguire, adding: "I thought the team selection was very fearless from Solskjaer, keeping out Paul Pogba, starting Scott McTominay - he was excellent in that position, showed great energy and it was certainly a reaction that the manager will have been absolutely delighted with".

On the 23-year-old, Solskjaer added: "I think you see today and in training, he's so neat and tidy, I don't think he lost the ball once". He had an impact.

"It's about finding the balance in the team".
