Ontario says no trick or treating this Halloween in COVID-19 hotspots

Ontario says no trick or treating this Halloween in COVID-19 hotspots”

"By law, indoor private gatherings must be limited to 10 people or less - the fewer the people, the lower the risk".

Dr. David Williams is not recommending door to door trick or treating in Ottawa, York, Peel, or Toronto where the number of COVID-19 infections continues to rise.

Durham is now not considered a "hotspot" by the province and is still in Stage 3 of the reopening plan. The door also has a built-in Bluetooth-enabled speaker that activates once you say those magic trick-or-treat words.

Officials are asking people not to "congregate or linger at doorsteps" and to stay physically distanced while waiting for candy.

Maintain physical distancing of at least two metres with those outside your household.

Do not leave treats in a bucket or bowl for children to grab and consider using tongs or other similar tools to hand out treats.

While it's still unclear how many, if any, people will be participating in trick-or-treating this year, the stores' shelves are still stocked with Halloween candy.

However, this time of year also features the emergence of one of the more controversial sweets: candy corn. Anyone who is ill or self isolating should not hand out candy.

"A costume mask is not a substitute for a face covering and should not be worn over a face covering as it may make it hard to breathe", officials clarified. It can be found on APH's website.

The goal should be to find ways to do things safely rather than cancel Halloween activities, Dr. Isaac Bogoch said.

He also noted that people should check with their local public health unit or municipality for any additional advice or restrictions that may be in place.

The provincial government is recommending that kids not go out trick-or-treating in parts of Ontario that have been hardest hit by a resurgence in COVID-19 cases. More than 50,000 tests have been administered.

There were also 607 resolved cases.
