Romney targets Trump after his refusal to denounce conspiracy theory”

United States president Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden hit the campaign trail again yesterday after displaying their sharply contrasting styles in duelling televised town-hall events on Thursday evening.

"I just told you", Ms Guthrie responded.

A combative Mr Trump, sparring with moderator Savannah Guthrie on NBC, refused to condemn the weird conspiracy theory QAnon, reiterated his unsubstantiated assertion the 2020 election is rife with fraud, and questioned whether masks can help combat the spread of Covid-19.

The president initially answered that he didn't know what QAnon was, and then later praised them for being against pedophilia when pressed by Guthrie to denounce the believers of the conspiracy. "I do know they are very much against paedophilia, they fight it very hard, but I know nothing about it", Trump said.

Savannah Guthrie takes her time to ask about a insane conspiracy theory to which the president said, 'I don't know what you're talking about. Yeah, so am I.' He doesn't know anything about the group, he was clear.

On Friday, former Republican presidential nominee and current Senator Mitt Romney slammed Trump for his "unwillingness to denounce an absurd and risky conspiracy theory". Ben Sasse (R-NE), who called the theory "nuts".

"He may be right, I just don't know about QAnon", Trump insisted.

The moderator, Savannah Guthrie, also asked Trump about his recent retweeting of a post alleging that President Barack Obama had killed members of SEAL Team 6, the Navy special operators who killed Osama Bin Laden, and that Bin Laden was still alive.

In August this year, Trump amplified QAnon messaging at least 216 times by retweeting or mentioning 129 QAnon-affiliated Twitter accounts, according to Media Matters for America. "That was a retweet - that was an opinion of somebody". "I'll put it out there, people can decide for themselves, I don't take a position".

"When the American people got the chance to ask the questions that concerned their futures, not just for them and their families, but for their children, for their friends, they asked serious questions about the economy, they asked serious questions about jobs coming back, questions about covid. You're the president, not someone's insane uncle".
