Vijay Sethupathi bows down to pressure

Vijay Sethupathi bows down to pressure”

Vijay Sethupathi and Muttiah Muralitharan. The Sri Lankan outfits were opposing Sethupathi's casting as the lead in the film.

Vijay Sethupathi has announced his decision to opt-out of the film titled 800, a biopic on Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan.

The last fortnight has seen Sethupathi and the wider Tamil film industry drawn into the controversy, as Tamil fans voiced their opposition to the popular actor portraying the cricketer - a supporter of the ruling Rajapaksa regime in Sri Lanka, who has frequently spoken up against Tamil rights campaigners in the North-East and against Malayaga Tamil labour rights campaigners.

The legendary sportsman said he agreed to a biopic on him as it would give enthusiasm and determination to future generations in addition to young cricketers and such an initiative too has confronted impediments. Vijay Sehtupathi reshared Muttiah Muralitharan's statement in which he requested the actor to back out from the project as he doesn't want to spoil anyone's career. We saw trends like Shame On Vijay Sethupathi (and many others) at the top.

The actor tweeted a statement that he received from Muralitharan that read, "I am releasing this statement since there is a lot of controversy in Tamil Nadu around my biopic 800". Due to misconception, several people were pressing actor Vijay Sethupathi to drop out of 800 the film.

"I know that that due to misunderstandings about myself, some are placing huge pressure on actor Vijay Sethupathi to withdraw from the "800" film, and I do not wish for an outstanding artist in Tamil Nadu to be affected by me". There should be no obstacles for Vijay Sethupathi in the future because of this movie.

It further read, "I have never given up when I have faced obstacles in my life". Muralitharan said obstacles were nothing new and he was not exhausted of it, adding all his achievements became a reality only after overcoming them. I am sure that the creators of this movie will make it reach such people despite the hurdles. A Twitter user, who goes by the name Rithik (Handle: @ItsRithikRajh), issued rape threat against Vijay Sethupathi's minor daughter and further wrote, "in order for her father to understand the hard lives led by Tamils in Sri Lanka". The makers of the film have told me they will come out with an announcement on the film soon, I would be helping them in all the ways I can. "I will stand by their efforts." he added.
