United Kingdom health minister advocates worldwide rethink on mink farming after Danish outbreak

United Kingdom health minister advocates worldwide rethink on mink farming after Danish outbreak”

Asked for comment, Environment and Food Minister Mogens Jensen said the government regretted the lack of clarity. It needed to have passed new legislation in order to legally mandate a cull.

"I regret that has not been the case here". The government also has the option to use the standard legislative route, which would only require more than 50% backing, but take longer.

Hancock had earlier warned of "grave" consequences if the variant became widespread, although he said the chances of that were low.

"There is an global case on public health grounds for addressing this question of mink farming which we banned in the United Kingdom two decades ago".

The province's Chief Veterinary Officer is maintaining frequent communication with the NL Fur Breeders Association concerning COVID-19 after a mutation of the virus in Denmark was linked back to mink farming.

Poland's mink population is roughly half the size of the Danish one.

In Wisconsin, about 5,000 mink have died on two farms, State Veterinarian Darlene Konkle said. Authorities are working with the second farm to determine how to dispose of the mink, and dead animals are being kept in a metal container in the meantime, she said.

Veterinary authorities said they had prepared animal testing procedures and infrastructure in May, but did not specify whether tests had been undertaken.

"The conclusion of the Statens Serum Institute is very clear: continued breeding of mink during an ongoing COVID-19 epidemic poses a significant risk to public health, including the possibilities of preventing COVID-19 with vaccines", she said, referring to the guidelines of the Government's Department of Public Health and Infectious Diseases. "Mink, already stressed from the unnatural living conditions, experience severe respiratory distress before dying", they said. It gave no further details about whether the animals have been tested.

"There's a risk that this mutated virus is so different from the others that we'd need to put new things during a vaccine and thus [the mutation] would slam us beat the entire world back to the beginning", Molbak previously told The Guardian.

Poland and Finland are reported to be free of Covid-19 on mink farms, while in the Netherlands fur farming will effectively end this year. "Or it already exists but we do not know about it", Pawel Rawicki from the Open Cages said.

Confronting photos have emerged of Denmark's operation to kill millions of animals to stop a potential coronavirus outbreak.
