Argentina stun All Blacks in historic Tri-Nations shock

Argentina stun All Blacks in historic Tri-Nations shock”

Mario Ledesma coached the team to its first victory over the New Zealand champions in the club's 35 year history.

"We have been through hell and the boys just kept ticking".

'Just so proud of them'.

"You just don't come here and perform like that", Ledesma said.

The rugby world was left stunned on Saturday when Argentina, a team that had not played an global since last year's World Cup beat the All Blacks in a Tri Nations encounter in Sydney.

Before the match the team released a video showing how players had trained at home, been isolated from their families and quarantined from their team-mates during the months before the match.

Foster shrugged off mounting pressure but the manner in which the Pumas brought more passion, urgency and accuracy to their triumph cut the All Blacks deep, leaving them searching for answers as to how they were upstaged by a side that had not played a test for 402 days.

The 27-year-old believes that the addition of former Australia and Leinster coach Michael Cheika in the team's backroom staff helped inspire the Pumas. "You've got everything, you've got big players, young players, you've got a lot of energy, just go and take it", Matera recalled.

Ledesma said his team focused on "just staying positive with everything that is going on. which in itself is already a lot". We are going to have to learn and to learn fast.

Cheika was hired as an "external advisor" in September with the Rugby Championship in mind.

Argentina captain Pablo Matera, who led by example with a brutal performance at blindside flanker, said he had fully expected the Pumas to beat New Zealand for the first time in 30 attempts.

Successive defeats for the first time in nine years paints a stark picture of where this team, at the beginning of a new cycle, sits.

The former Wallabies coach didn't have much success against New Zealand during his time in charge of Australia but his impact with the Pumas was immediate.

Foster was the safe choice for the New Zealand Rugby Union following the end of Hansen's trophy-laden tenure, and ticked all the boxes in terms of the governing body's desire to consistently evolve from within as he had been a key member of the previous coaching team.

"We just wanted to show our people if you work hard with a lot of determination you can get things done", said Matera.
