Deadly protest after Peru's president impeached”

Rosario Mendoza, a teacher who joined thousands of demonstrators in the street protest said: "Enough of the corruption, that's why I'm here with my pot, shouting".

Global human rights groups have expressed concern about the use of force by police against protesters and the Organization of American States has called for Peru's Constitutional Court to give clarity on the constitutionality of the impeachment process.

Peru's National Human Rights Coordinator said 11 people wounded on Thursday, including some journalists.

"There are many people who are frustrated, who have spent a lot of time confined in their homes", he said.

"As a citizen, I am not going to leave the country, I am not going to go to any embassy or get admitted into a clinic".

Prime Minister Antero Flores-Araoz told reporters that Vizcarra's removal on corruption charges by the opposition-dominated Congress was legal, and said Merino had no intention of caving to protesters demands he resign.

Lima's global airport said it was closed due to the night curfew.

Merino has stated the presidential vote will take place as scheduled and defended Vizcarra's ouster, saying it was an "act of absolute responsibility" and even calling the former president "a thief".

Interim president Merino urged calm.

Congress Speaker Merino replaced him as Peru's third president in four years.

The mostly young protesters gathered in various cities to oppose what they call a parliamentary coup against ousted president Mr Vizcarra.

"Merino, you messed with the wrong generation", several signs read at one of this week's gathering.

An AFP photographer was struck by pellets in his arm and leg during the march in Plaza San Martin.

The plaza has been the centre of protests in the capital.

"It is essential to listen and attend to the cries and the clamor of the population to regain confidence, tranquility and social peace", he said in a statement. "I owe him respect, consideration and loyalty, I can not leave him alone", he said.

Vizcarra is accused of accepting 2.3 million soles (about 655,000 US dollars) from two consortiums in exchange for public works contracts in Moquegua, and was impeached by Congress on Monday.
