'Farewell, Soumitra Da': Mamata Banerjee bids goodbye to Bengal's legendary actor

'Farewell, Soumitra Da': Mamata Banerjee bids goodbye to Bengal's legendary actor”

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly has mourned the death of legendary actor and Dada Saheb Phalke Award victor Soumitra Chatterjee, who passed away at the age of 85 in Kolkata on Sunday. "We pay our homage to his soul", an official statement said on Sunday.

"International, Indian and Bengali cinema have lost a legend today".

"Despite all our efforts his physiological system is not responding".

While the sad news wasn't entirely unexpected, given his age and the complications he had developed after contracting COVID-19, the formal announcement of his departure numbed Kolkata, his home, and shocked fans across the globe. "He has been put on all sorts of support and he is fighting for his life", reported PTI. We are making our last efforts.

Soumitra Chatterjee was admitted in a Kolkata hospital on October 6th after he tested positive for Covid-19. "But it is nearly a point of no return... from where he can come back and survive", Arindam Kar, one of the doctors treating Chatterjee, said. An EEG had shown there is very little activity in the brain, the doctor had said.

"Even miracles may fall short in this situation", a doctor treating the thespian at the hospital had said in a medical bulletin on Saturday. He received plasma therapy to fight the virus and was attended by a team of 10 doctors from Belle Vue Clinic.

Chatterjee symbolised versatility in Bengal's film industry - commonly known as "Tollywood". His character Apu from Apur Sansar (1959), the third film in Ray's The Apu Trilogy, was also fondly remembered.

Since then, his smile has melted millions of hearts, his shrewdness as detective "Feluda" complemented the Bengali intellect and his impish grin as the "good looking" antagonist made audiences' blood boil with his Machiavellian persona. He also won the Dadasaheb Phalke award, India's highest award in cinema, for his contribution and lifetime achievement as well as was bestowed the Padma Bhushan by the government of India. Soumitra Chatterjee was also directed by other Bengali cinematic greats, including Mrinal Sen, Tapan Sinha, Ajoy Kar. In 2017, he became the first Indian film personality conferred with the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, France's highest award for artists.
