Ivy League cancels 2020-21 winter sports season amid coronavirus pandemic

Ivy League cancels 2020-21 winter sports season amid coronavirus pandemic”

Ivy League schools will not be competing in intercollegiate sports this winter because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ivy League Council of Presidents said.

In addition, to the postponement of all sports until at least March 1the conference also announced that it will no longer hold in abeyance its previous delay in deciding to allow fall sports to play in the spring by formally canceling fall sports competition during the 2021 spring semester.

Just as in July, when it was the first to announce the cancellation of fall sports and winter sports until January 1, the Ivy League is also the first NCAA Division I conference to make such an announcement for the entire winter sports season.

As much as it hurts to see this, the safety and health of the student-athletes matters most rather than risking everything for a simple game.

The Ivy League includes Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University and Yale University.

The fate of the Ivy League's winter season has always been in jeopardy, given the nationwide spike in COVID-19 cases, and this decision comes less than two weeks before the scheduled start of the Division I basketball season, which tips off on November 25. The League was also the first to announce that it would not be holding any fall sports due to the pandemic.

Penn's affected winter teams include men's and women's basketball, whose postseasons were cut short last March with the cancellation of Ivy Madness just three days before it was set to start.

While the Ivy League rarely gets the national sports spotlight, its decision is significant. The NCAA recently committed to a 27 game schedule for basketball in the 2020-21 season. Lastly, intercollegiate athletics competition for spring sports is postponed through at least the end of February 2021.

Student-athletes, their families and coaches are again being asked to make enormous sacrifices for the good of public health - and we do not make this decision lightly.

"We look forward to the day when intercollegiate athletics - which are such an important part of the fabric of our campus communities - will safely return in a manner and format we all know and appreciate", the Ivy League Council of Presidents said.

Winter and fall student-athletes will not lose a season of eligibility from the Ivy League or the NCAA, the Ivy League said.
