Seven dead in North Carolina floods”

At least seven people died in North Carolina on Thursday as flash floods swept through parts of the state, authorities said, adding at least two people were missing.

Swift water rescue personnel and local fire departments saved 31 people from their vehicles, some of them hanging onto their campers, according to Gillespie.

Five counties declared a state of emergency Thursday, according to the state's Deputy Director of Emergency Management.

The Charlotte Observer reports that four people were killed in Alexander County, located about an hour north of Charlotte.

Another person died in a vehicle accident where a bridge was damaged near Vashti, according to county officials. The Wake County Sheriff's Office said an 11-year-old child drowned in Rolesville.

In the state's Alexander County emergency responders found three bodies and evacuated more than 30 people from a campground, emergency services said.

At least four bridges and 50 roadways in Alexander County in the western Piedmont region of North Carolina were damaged by the floodwaters, the authorities said.

Alexander County Emergency Services has opened a storm shelter for those affected by the flooding, and it is now sheltering 13 people, according to the latest update from the county.

A Charlotte, North Carolina, TV reporter narrowly escaped the vicious flash flooding in North Carolina, reporting live, inches away from a section of a bridge that collapsed underneath her. As the bridge starts to collapse, she yells "OK this is INCREDIBLY SCARY".

The campground is approximately 50 miles north of Charlotte.

Shocking local television footage shows the moment part of a bridge collapsed as a reporter stood just a few feet away amid heavy rains in North Carolina on Thursday.

Some areas of the state have received about 10 inches of rain, according to the report.
