GM issues recall for over 50k Chevrolet Bolt vehicles”

A 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV is displayed during the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

General Motors says it will recall almost 69,000 Chevrolet Bolt electric cars worldwide because the batteries have caught fire in five of them.

The recall includes 68,667 vehicles globally and 50,925 in the U.S. Since GM is still unsure of the root cause of the fires, it can't release the customary percentage of vehicles affected.

The recall covers Bolts from the 2017 through 2019 model years, including almost 51,000 in the U.S. The recalled vehicles were topped with batteries made at LG Chem's Ochang factory.

The government isn't mincing words as they said "These vehicles can catch fire even if they are turned off, parked, and disconnected from a charging unit". The office then found a similar case involving a 2017 model.

GM is asking Bolt owners to take their cars to dealerships for a software upgrade that will limit recharging to 90% of full battery capacity as a short-term fix as it works to find a permanent remedy.

Ortega said the GM noticed the fires and began investigating in July, and it's cooperating with NHTSA. Auto owners were also asked to refrain from parking their vehicles in a garage or carport before the necessary changes are made.

In order to address the issue, General Motor had been working out a plan to limit the recalled vehicles' charging capacity below 90 per cent. This isn't the first time a carmaker announced a major recall over its EVs. The remainder and all 2020 model-year cars use batteries made in the US.

Auto makers have been rolling out new plug-in models as the industry looks to accelerate its shift from gasoline-powered vehicles toward battery-powered ones. The NHTSA is already investigating Tesla over fire reports, while Audi and others have also recalled some vehicles.

If it is, vehicle owners should call their nearest dealership immediately to schedule a free interim fix. The vehicles were topped with lithium-ion batteries made from Chinese CATL.
