Apple’s MagSafe Duo Charger Doesn’t Support 15W Charging

Apple’s MagSafe Duo Charger Doesn’t Support 15W Charging”

The MagSafe Duo Charger is to retail for $129, and in comparison the regular MagSafe Charger is $39. We've already seen some minor problems with Apple's own case accessories, and Apple's MagSafe charger isn't as fast as you might expect for its rated 15W power output. As noted by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the Duo charges at up to 11W with a 20W USB-C adapter, maxing out at 14W with an adapter that's 27W or higher. For example, if you are buying the new iPhone 12 Mini then you may want to skip Apple's new MagSafe wireless charger which offers wireless charging speeds of up to 15W.

The new iPhone 12 lineup is capable of charging wirelessly at up to 15W. Apple sells a 30W USB type-C adapter bundled with the MacBook Air for $49.

This problem isn't specific to the iPhone either, and in fact using a MagSafe charger will provide more efficient charging than most competing smartphones simply by guaranteeing proper coil alignment. When it first appeared, Apple recommends that you get a 20W USB-C Power Adapter which is sold separately. However, take note that the smaller iPhone 12 mini is capped at a lower 12W. At the moment, there's no release date for the MagSafe Duo charger, Apple's website just states "Coming soon". According to the updated product description, the ‌MagSafe‌ Duo Charger can only deliver 11 watts of power when paired with a 20-watt USB-C adapter, and 14 watts when paired with a 27-watt or higher USB-C adapter.

Apple has not yet made its MagSafe Duo charger available for customers yet but even if it goes on sale, it may not see a whole lot of sales or excitement around it.
