CHINA Chinese experimental vaccine induces a quick response

CHINA Chinese experimental vaccine induces a quick response”

These efforts have started to come to fruition as some of the leading vaccine candidates have shown promise in preventing, both, the severity of Covid-19 disease and the infection itself.

That means the candidate vaccines are being tested in animal experiments, for example, rather than with human patients.

The past two weeks have brought a flurry of promising vaccine news. News18 delves into the progress of these vaccines.

Sinovac has released data about early clinical trials of its vaccine against the coronavirus. It's made differently from the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.

New data from Oxford University shows that its vaccine ChAdOx1 nCov-2019 produces a strong immune response in older adults, aged 56-69 and those over 70 years of age.

Indian vaccine manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies and biotech companies have inked deals with foreign based vaccine developers.

Dr. Larry Bush of Wellington says the public should not be skeptical about the safety of the vaccine and is willing to take it as soon as possible.

Serum Institute of India (SII), Pune, has inked deals with Oxford-AstraZeneca, Codagenix and Novavax to manufacture their vaccines. It is expected to get vaccines from Gavi by the end of 2021. SII is also Oxford-AstraZeneca's domestic partner to conduct clinical trials in the country.

Storage of vaccines as several vaccine candidates have varying requirements.

"It's critical to have diverse participants in a coronavirus vaccine trial so we know it is effective for populations that are often underrepresented in research", said XinQi Dong, who's directing community recruitment for the Johnson & Johnson trial. The company claimed that it is the largest clinical trial in India for a Covid-19 vaccine.

Volunteers will receive two intramuscular injections approximately 28 days apart. ICMR is funding the clinical trial site fees.

Sinovac's Phase 1 trial began in April with 144 participants, and its Phase 2 trial began in May with 600 people.

Sinovac is already pushing ahead with late-stage trials, although one phase 3 trial of its vaccine was stopped in Brazil this month after reports of a serious safety concern, with one report stating a death is involved but that it was not in the vaccine arm. Biological E began Phase-I and II combined trials of its vaccine just a few days back. During the first phase, the vaccine will be available for frontline healthcare workers in hospitals, long-term care staff and residents, and first responders.

"For Phase 3 preliminary analysis of results, we need to accumulate a certain number of cases for the data analysts to carry out their analysis", the Sinovac spokesman said in a statement to The Washington Post. But for now, researchers are celebrating this reassuring early data. SII-ICMR and Bharat Biotech-ICMR are likely to finish their Phase-III efficacy trials before others in India.

Logistical challenges facing the Centre in administering the vaccine comprises cold chain systems for proper transportation and storage.

What happens after a vaccine has been approved?

Adequate cold chain facilities to protect the vaccine against warmer temperatures.
