Early results indicate AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine is promising”

"I'd be concerned. that [CoronaVac] seemed to induce lower antibody levels than what we've seen with other vaccines and lower than what you see in most people who have had disease and recovered", says Dr. Gregory Poland, a vaccinologist and professor at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

The ongoing pandemic has seen numerous countries race for an effective vaccine against COVID-19, with Sinovac running phase 3 trials in Brazil, Indonesia and Turkey, Reuters reported.

In the first phase, 144 healthy volunteers were enrolled between April 16 and April 25, 2020. "Our findings show that CoronaVac is capable of inducing a quick antibody response within four weeks of immunization by giving two doses of the vaccine at a 14-day interval", the researchers said in the journal.

Oxford University and AstraZeneca's potential COVID-19 vaccine produced a strong immune response in older adults, newly published data has showed, with researchers expecting to release late-stage trial results by Christmas.

Phase 2 trials took place from 3 to 5 May with similar doses but with 300 participants, but production capacity was increased.

Dr Naor Bar-Zeev from Johns Hopkins University, who was not involved in the study, said the results must be interpreted with caution until phase three results are published. "But even then, after phase three trial completion and after licensure, we should prudently remain cautious", he said. The Astra-Oxford data readout will come after there have been 53 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the trial, Andrew Pollard, Oxford's chief trial investigator, said at a press briefing. The other two are developed by institutes linked to Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinopharm.

Investigations found that boosted manufacturing processes led to a higher number of spike proteins on inactivated viruses in the vaccine, which are used to recognise COVID-19 and trigger an immune response. "(It) would offer some advantages for distribution to regions where access to refrigeration is challenging", he said.

While CoronaVac was produced with tried-and-true methods, the mRNA technology is new, and there hasn't been an mRNA vaccine approved by the Food and Drug Administration before.

Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE have said their vaccine candidate was found to be more than 95% effective in preventing COVID-19. Pfizer vaccine requires storage at -70 degree celsius whereas Sputnik V has to be stored at temperature lower than -18 degree celsius during transportation. Moderna's vaccine is expected to be stable at normal fridge temperatures for 30 days but for storage of up to six months, it needs to be kept at minus 20 deg C. Now we've got to get the data about the vaccines in front of regulators for them to scrutinize it and approve the first vaccines.
