Ugandan politician and pop star Bobi Wine says he has been arrested”

Videos emerged online on Wednesday morning of Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, being bundled into a van by a large group of well-armed Ugandan police.

Uganda Red Cross team pictured helping a woman affected during the protests that broke out around Kampala following the arrest of presidential aspirant Robert Kyagulanyi on November 18, 2020.

Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

As a result, police fired teargas to disperse his supporters before detaining Amuria. Some purportedly showed a demonstrator lying motionless on the road after being shot by police, while another Twitter post said a local vendor had been killed.

Riots erupted in the Ugandan capital after the authorities arrested Bobi Wine, a pop star-turned-politician who's running against President Yoweri Museveni in elections scheduled for January.

Mr Kyagulanyi was arrested in the country's eastern district of Luuka during a campaign rally for violating the Electoral Commission guidelines on the number of people who should be present during candidates' campaigns.

Local broadcaster NTV reported Wine is being detained in the town of Jinja for breaching a COVID-19 ban on gatherings of more than 200 people.

"As of yesterday evening we had seven people who lost their lives, about 45 people got injuries including an LDU (armed civilian force) whose head was smashed", police spokesperson Fred Enanga said.

The Uganda Red Cross said in a statement that it treated more than 30 people in Kampala following "scuffles involving the police and the rioting masses", including 11 people for gunshot wounds.

Two journalists were beaten and one arrested at the scene.

Ugandans will vote in a general election on January 14, 201 to elect a president and members of parliament.

A NUP coordinator, Moses Bigirwa, said the police "are still tightlipped on the circumstances surrounding Wine's arrest".

Uganda's police chief Martin Okoth Ochola had warned that officers were taking "a tougher approach to preserve the integrity of the electoral process". He added that unauthorised assemblies would not be permitted.

At least three of the opposition candidates have also been blocked from campaigning in certain areas.
