World’s last known white giraffe gets GPS tracking device

World’s last known white giraffe gets GPS tracking device”

The only known white giraffe left in the world has been fitted with a Global Positioning System tracking device to help protect it from poachers in Kenya.

Rangers will be able to track giraffe movements in a conservation area located in Garissa County, eastern Kenya.

The female white giraffe stirred huge interest in 2017 when she was first spotted on the conservancy and again when she birthed two calves, the latest in August previous year.

Poaching is an incredibly serious issue and for such a unique animal like the last known white giraffe, it is even more important. "The giraffe's grazing range has been blessed with good rains in the recent past and the abundant vegetation bodes well for the future of the white male", said Ahmed Noor, Manager Ishaqbini Hirola Community Conservancy.

According to AP, the tracking device was attached to one of the giraffe's horns and will give updates of its location every hour.

In March, the remains of two living white animals that lived in Kenya's wildlife sanctuary were found in a state of disrepair, killed by hunters.

The White House was the first woman to be discovered, along with her calf, in 2017.

"Our mission is to work with communities, enable them [to] be resilient, secure their livelihoods as well as protect the unique wildlife like the only known white giraffe", said Antony Wandera, senior wildlife monitoring officer at the NRT.

This was what prompted the exercise on Sunday, November 8, at the request of the board of Ishaqbini Community Conservancy to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and with support from the Northern Rangelands Trust and Save Giraffes Now.

"Further to this the white giraffe was a big boost to tourism in the area". They are hunted by poachers for their hides, meat and body parts.

Giraffes have been designated as a vulnerable species on The International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List, with an estimated population of 68,293 globally.
