Apple to pay another US$113M to settle iPhone battery claims

Apple to pay another US$113M to settle iPhone battery claims”

According to an Arizona filing, millions of users were affected by power shutoffs.

Apple Inc will pay $113 million to settle allegations from 33 US states and the District of Columbia that it slowed down iPhones to mask battery issues and get users to purchase new devices, state officials announced on Wednesday.

Apple will pay a $US113 million settlement in an investigation into the company's practice of intentionally slowing old iPhones down, a move that some customers perceived as a tactic to force them into purchasing new, more expensive models.

Apple at the time did admit that the updates indeed slowed down the phones to prevent their ageing batteries from causing the devices to randomly shut down. States contended Apple acted deceptively and should have replaced batteries or disclosed the issue.

"Companies can not be disingenuous and hide things", he added.

Today's proposed settlement is on top of the $310 million to $500 million Apple has agreed to pay to USA consumers to resolve an earlier class-action lawsuit over Batterygate. Apple has also agreed to be more transparent about similar changes to iOS devices in the future, providing more detail about battery health and power management. Arizona said Apple's present disclosures and options are sufficient. Next month, the court will hold a hearing to review whether the settlement is fair.

Arizona, along with the attorneys general for IN and Arkansas, led the investigation. Apple, though, has never acknowledged any wrongdoing.

After the throttling was discovered, Apple apologized and launched a battery replacement program that saw the company offering batteries for older devices for $29. Customers from Apple's home state of California will receive $24.6 million as part of the overall settlement.

Nowhere near as small as the iPhone 12 mini or as powerful as any one of Apple's four main iPhone 12 variants released of late, the "regular-sized" iPhone 11 is still pretty compact and reasonably fast, with a 6.1-inch screen and A13 Bionic processor in tow.

This new investigation was launched by more than 30 states, including Arizona, Arkansas, and IN, according to a press release.
