Ontario reports 1,418 new coronavirus cases; cumulative case count tops 100,000”

Ford says the province must make the move to protect hospital capacity and residents of long-term care homes.

The news comes as Premier Doug Ford and his cabinet are poised to consider new measures, including lockdowns, for the province's COVID-19 hot spots.

The premier noted that the virus is coming into LTC homes through visitors and staff.

He said he expects to announce the new measures for Toronto, Peel, and York Region on Friday.

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath said Thursday the troubles are the result of a "confused, erratic, delayed and underfunded response" to the pandemic by Ford's government.

Ontario reported an additional 1,417 cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, as well as 32 more deaths linked to the illness - the most on any single day during the second wave of the pandemic that's now gripping parts of the province.

Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 211 cases, rate of 106 per 100,000 people. Ford told reporters that things are going very well in schools and pointed to the fact that, at the time of his comments, only one school in Ontario has had to close because of the coronavirus.

York Region has increased from 143 cases to 168, and Ottawa has more than doubled with 77 new cases.

There are 150 COVID-19 patients in intensive care, according to the Ontario Hospital Association.

These outbreaks are "highly aligned" with community spread of COVID-19, he said.

The update is the latest in a string of promising developments on the vaccine front in recent days. "(Canadians) will be able to be vaccinated and have a large part of the population covered by the end of the year", Njoo said. There are now 43 Ottawans hospitalized with the disease (down from 47 Tuesday), including four in ICU.

To date the province has confirmed 99,372 COVID-19 cases and reported 83,301 recoveries and 3,443 deaths.

The province has now confirmed 100,790 cases of COVID-19 since January. "It is by limiting our contacts that we will be able to decrease the number of cases and thus avoid deaths".

"CUPE Ontario's 280,000 members mourn the loss of our sister, a CUPE education worker at who passed away after contracting COVID-19". The region's COVID-19 death toll now sits at 67.
