Oxford Covid-19 vaccine shown to be safe in older adults”

In the phase 2 trial of this study, 560 participants from Oxford and Southampton were divided into three different age groups: 18-55, 56-69, and 70 and older.

Dr. Andrew Pollard, an expert in pediatric infection and immunity at Oxford, said research was slowed by low infection rates over the summer, but the Phase III trials are now accumulating the data needed to report results as a renewed surge of the pandemic hits countries around the world.

Infectious disease specialists answer questions about COVID-19 vaccines including if results from clinical trials will hold up in the real world.

"We still need to collect all the data on that though", she said. Drugmaker AstraZeneca is working with the university on the vaccine.

The authors also note that the oldest age group in their study - whose average age is 73-74 - may not represent the general population because they happened to have relatively few underlying health conditions, given their age.

"We're not in a rush".

In September, the Department of Health requested at least 12.9 billion pesos (258 million dollars) for the initial purchase of the vaccines, storage facilities and other requirements.

The results of the peer-reviewed study were published Thursday in the Lancet, an worldwide medical journal.

The team also studied neutralising antibody in the participants, and found that similar levels of neutralising antibody responses were seen after two doses, regardless of age.

"Up until now, we've looked at antibody, which protects the circulating fluid (blood and tissue flow) from the virus".

Larger studies are now underway to evaluate immunogenicity, safety and efficacy in older adults with a wider range of comorbidities.

Ministry of National Health Services Regulations and Coordination has sought $150 million funds from the federal government for advance booking of COVID-19 vaccines, ARY News reported on Friday.

This month Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna announced the results of phase 3 trials - which are much larger than phase 2 and normally include tens of thousands of subjects - that suggested both vaccine candidates were effective in preventing COVID-19. The early results raise hopes that the vaccine can protect the people most at risk of getting severely ill from the new coronavirus.
