Reuters tally: Europe's COVID-19 cases surpass 15 million mark”

Mr Kluge said Europe accounted for 28% of global cases and 26% of deaths.

The number of coronavirus cases in Europe surpassed the 15 million mark on Friday, according to a Reuters tally, as the region sees a surge in infections with the onset of winter, reporting a million new infections about every four days.

Within the region, Eastern Europe has roughly one-third of total cases in Europe and 24% of deaths in reported in the region.

WHO's Americas region registered a 41 per cent increase in new cases, suggesting that a higher weekly death toll could soon follow there.

More than one million of the new cases were seen in the United States, which has counted almost 11 million cases since the beginning of the pandemic. Southeast Asia was the only region that saw a drop in cases and deaths.

The new coronavirus pandemic has caused more than 1.3 million deaths in the world since the onset of the disease in December.

Officials in the Netherlands were easing coronavirus restrictions amid falling infection rates, and were poised to reopen public venues such as cinemas, museums, libraries, zoos and swimming pools - still with limitations on how many people can visit - after a two-week closure.

In the German capital of Berlin, violent clashes between those protesting coronavirus restrictions and police erupted Wednesday near the city center after protesters disregarded police advice to wear masks and social distance.

However, he said new cases were declining as lockdowns curb infections. In Europe, the United Kingdom has the highest death toll at 53,870, while France has the highest number of cases at 2,115,717.

The WHO regional director for Europe said that primary schools should remain open and added that children and adolescents are not the initiators of the spread of the coronavirus and that closing schools is not efficient, Reuters reports.

European countries are still facing high rates of infection and death, with Italy registering 753 fatalities on Wednesday, its highest daily tally since the first wave.

Pockets of Western Europe have shown signs of turning a corner, particularly in the lowlands near the English Channel.

Steven Van Gucht, a virologist in Belgium attached to the local organization Sciensano, said that the average daily death rate is now 185, a decrease of 5% from the previous week's average. Of every 100 infections last reported worldwide, about 39 were reported from countries in Europe.
