Russell Westbrook Informs Rockets Front Office He Wants Out of Houston

Russell Westbrook Informs Rockets Front Office He Wants Out of Houston”

The Russell Westbrook-James Harden reunion tour may be canceled.

Almost two months after the bumpy departure of former coach Mike D'Antoni and a month after former general manager Daryl Morey's unexpected exit, sources tell The Athletic's Shams Charania that one-time MVP and nine-time All-Star Russell Westbrook wants out of Houston.

This makes for a sticky situation for the Houston Rockets team in win-now mode with a new head coach, and few assets available to improve the roster with the start of the 2020-21 season about a month away from tip-off.

But after bowing out in the conference semi-finals to the LA Lakers this year, it looks as if Houston's gamble to bring Westbrook across will end in failure. Daryl Morey left for a new challenge in Philly, not long after Mike D'Antoni parted ways with the organization too.

"Russ" reportedly told the team he's "uneasy about the team's accountability and culture" and wants to return to being a floor general like he was at Oklahoma City.

James Harden is said to be "locked in" for next season and committed to the Rockets, The Athletic reported on Wednesday. After one year in Texas, the nine-time All-Star Westbrook played in 57 games where he averaged 27.2 points, 7.9 rebounds and 7 assists per contest.

Westbrook is owed $132.6 million over the next three years of his deal, with a player option worth over $47 million for the 2022-23 season that likely will present a big barrier in any trade talks. Also departing is D'Antoni, who was replaced by longtime National Basketball Association assistant Stephen Silas.
