CDC Cancels Thanksgiving: Agency Advises Against Holiday Travel Amid COVID Surge

CDC Cancels Thanksgiving: Agency Advises Against Holiday Travel Amid COVID Surge”

"CDC is recommending against travel during the Thanksgiving period", Henry Walke, a CDC doctor working on the pandemic, told reporters.

The government agency said it was making the recommendation after many states across the country have experienced a surge in coronavirus cases in recent weeks. "I think from an individual household level, what's at stake is the increased chance of one of your loved ones becoming sick, being hospitalized and dying", Walke said.

Health officials at the agency also urged families of college students who are returning home for the holiday to be extra cautious because they'll be gathering with people outside of their normal communities.

"It is the right advice".

The U.S. has reported more than 11.5 million coronavirus infections and more than 250,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University data. "But this year we're asking them to limit their travel".

If celebrating indoors, it recommends that Americans open windows and put fans in front of open windows to pull fresh air into the room where guests are sitting.

Many Americans get together with their family and friends on and around Thanksgiving Day, the fourth Thursday of November.

Shares in airlines and hotel companies have plummeted since the beginning of the outbreak as public officials have advised against unnecessary travel.

Though recommending Thanksgiving celebrations to be virtual this year, the CDC recommended that those who do celebrate with others in person bring their "own food, drinks, plates, cups, and utensils", and wear masks. Based on its October models, it forecasts 50 million Americans will travel for the holiday, compared with 55 million in 2019.
