China says Five Eyes, including NZ, should face reality on Hong Kong

China says Five Eyes, including NZ, should face reality on Hong Kong”

The government of Chinese President Xi Jinping has repeatedly come under sharp criticism from heads of state over Beijing's handling of Hong Kong autonomy and the implementation of new and stricter laws.

"We deplore and firmly oppose relevant country's finger-pointing over China's Hong Kong affairs, which is a flagrant violation of global law and basic norms governing worldwide relations", Zhao said in the press conference.

Mahuta stressed that New Zealand has a respectful relationship with China that is "maturing".

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson on Thursday refuted a statement by the "Five Eyes" intelligence alliance over China's decision to disqualify certain Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Legislative Council (LegCo) members, reports UNB citing Xinhua.

She said New Zealand signed the Five Eyes statement - which New Zealand has previously refrained from doing - because "enough countries were expressing concern". "For the sake of Hong Kong's stability and prosperity, it is essential that China and the Hong Kong authorities respect the channels for the people of Hong Kong to express their legitimate concerns and opinions", the statement added, before concluding with a call for authorities to "immediately reinstate" the four lawmakers.

"There's no comparison between the strength and the size of a country like China and New Zealand, but New Zealand has an independent foreign policy".

"We'll continue to advocate for the values and principles that underpin an open democracy - things like freedom of speech, the ability for people to participate in their democratic institutions, the freedom of the press".

"Walking this fine line between China, which is our biggest trading partner right now, and our traditional allies and friends in the Five Eyes is going to be the most hard task we've had in quite a long time in diplomacy", he told RNZ. "One side's going to want us to be quiet, and the other side's going to want to make sure we don't fall out of the pack". The brothers had chose to set up their own establishment after often finding themselves seated next to the toilets in other restaurants because many owners at the time thought Chinese were not important customers. From that single restaurant in Central where the Landmark now stands, Maxim's has come a long way to become Hong Kong's largest restaurant group, with over 1,700 outlets and 24,000 staff in Hong Kong, China, Cambodia and Vietnam. It operates popular Chinese restaurant chains Jade Garden and Peking Garden, as well as western restaurants including Lawry's The Prime Rib, Italian deluxe bakery Cova, and Japanese restaurants such as Genki Sushi. They had remained in office because elections were postponed for one year.

Zhao further noted that most countries expect civil servants to uphold existing law and pledge loyalty to the nation: "Civil servants must uphold their country's constitutional laws and honor the pledge of allegiance to the motherland, which is the basic political ethics in all countries, right?"

Eddie Chu, one of the three, said he is facing "prosecution from the dictatorship" due to their actions to try to block passage of the national anthem ordinance. The law criminalises insult and abuse of the anthem, the March of the Volunteers.
