COVID cases among Mayo Clinic workers up nearly 30% in two weeks

COVID cases among Mayo Clinic workers up nearly 30% in two weeks”

More than 900 Mayo Clinic staff in Midwest locations have contracted the coronavirus in the past 2 weeks, according to ABC News. Doctor Williams says that number represents 30-percent of all of the known infections involving Mayo Clinic staff since the start of the pandemic.

In the last 14 days, 905 Mayo Clinic employees in the Midwest, including in Minnesota and Wisconsin, have been diagnosed with COVID-19, officials said.

As a result, across the Midwest, Mayo Clinics-which include clinics, hospitals, and other health care facilities that provide services to patients in Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin-has around 1,500 employees with work limitations due to staffers being exposed or diagnosed with COVID-19.

The medical center is "very worried" about the health of its staff and having enough people to care for patients as health care professionals themselves become infected with the virus or have to quarantine due to exposure, Dr. Amy Williams, executive dean of the Mayo Clinic Practice, said during a press call Tuesday. "We don't want families to be sick".

Dr. Williams says there are now 115 COVID patients being treated in the Mayo Clinic's hospitals in Rochester, while the total for Mayo Clinic facilities in the midwest is over 250. We don't want families to lose loved ones. "The staff we care about the most". "We will achieve this, but we must be safe, protect each other". Nurses on the frontline have expressed concern over their health and safety since they spend much more time with patients than all other healthcare workers, says Business Insider.

"We need your help".

The hospital system faces a major shortage of staff, and all ICU beds at its main campus are full.

"The public urgently needs to treat COVID-19 as a health emergency to prevent the healthcare system from becoming overwhelmed", the health system said in a statement last week.

At the time, about 50% of the ICU capacity was occupied by Covid-19 patients, the system said in a statement, and added that Covid-19 patients that are treated in the hospital normally stay about two to three times longer than non-Covid-19 patients.

In coming weeks, hospitalizations and deaths are expected to increase as the number of daily coronavirus cases continues to rise.

"We continue to see an increase in the number of patients in our communities that are getting Covid-19".

In the video update, Williams said they are also seeing more patients transferred from hospitals outside of the Mayo Clinic Health System. "We continue to see more and more hospitalizations", he said. In the midwest, the Mayo Clinic System consists of hospitals, clinics, and other facilities that serve patients in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota.
