Europe, US ‘climate guardian’ satellite to monitor oceans

Europe, US ‘climate guardian’ satellite to monitor oceans”

People who live in coastal communities or navigate treacherous waters will benefit from the data flowing from the new waters 6 goalkeeper Michael Freilich Satellite mission.

The Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich satellite, a collaboration between NASA and the European Space Agency, lifted off at 12:17 p.m. ET from Space Launch Complex 4 East at California's Vandenberg Air Force Base.

The satellite is due to be carried into orbit Saturday from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

"NASA is our strongest partner internationally", he said.

Sentinel-6 perceptions will be remembered for, for example, ocean wave gauges (convenient for transportation items over the sea) and hurricane forecasts, to empty seaside populaces rapidly if the need emerges.

For specialists hoping to improve their atmosphere models, Sentinel-6's work will effectively consolidate with other science missions. The pace of ocean level ascent is quickening, making it critical to add top notch information from Sentinel-6 to existing satellite altimeters, he noted.

Each Sentinel-6 probe carries a radar altimeter, which measures the time it takes for radar pulses to travel to Earth's surface and back again. Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment Satellites (GRACE).

The Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich satellite is scheduled to launch on Saturday as the next generation of spacecraft monitors the sea levels on our planet. Focus on returning the flag to the expedition.

"Since 70% of the Earth's surface is ocean, the oceans play an important role in how the whole system [of global warming] changes", she said.

Josh Willis, a Sentinel-6 project scientist at NASA, said the benefits from the Sentinel-6 data will flow to almost every sector affected by climate change, given that 90% of the heat trapped by human-emitted greenhouse gases ends up in the ocean.

"We're watching the rate of sea level rise right before our eyes, and it's satellites like this that allow us to do it", Willis said. "Sentinel-2 provides high resolution measurements in the coastal zone", Donlon said. The satellite will make it possible in particular to monitor the consequences of global warming on sea level.

A satellite jointly developed by Europe and the United States being launched this weekend will greatly help scientists keep track of the rise in global sea levels, one of the most daunting effects of climate change, a senior official at the European Space Agency said Friday.

"Extreme sea level events that are historically rare - once per century in the recent past - are projected to occur frequently, at least once per year, at many locations by 2050", especially in the tropics, the United Nations climate science advisory panel, the IPCC, concluded in a major report last year.

Over the last three decades, the French-US Topex-Poseidon and Jason mission series served as reference missions, and in combination with ESA's earlier ERS and Envisat satellites, as well as today's CryoSat and Copernicus Sentinel-3, they have shown how sea level has risen about 3.2 mm on average every year.

After launch, Sentinel-6 will fly 30 seconds behind Jason-3.

"This partnership is very much aligned with what Mike Freilich's passion has been", said Thomas Zurbuchen, NASA associate administrator for science, at the pre-launch briefing, noting Freilich's research in ocean sciences before taking the NASA position.
