Second Covid-19 Vaccine Shown To Be 95% Effective

Second Covid-19 Vaccine Shown To Be 95% Effective”

Pfizer and BioNTech had announced 90 per cent efficacy of its vaccine candidate exactly a week ago.

Moderna Inc's experimental COVID-19 vaccine is more stable than expected at temperatures that ordinary refrigerators can provide and can be distributed using existing cold-chain shipping and storage infrastructure. While we are optimistic with the progress being made, there are no guarantees and it is possible there will be no one-size-fits-all vaccine.

The third phase of Moderna's trial on a coronavirus vaccine candidate involved some 30,000 participants, half of which took a placebo while the other half received the actual vaccine under development.

"The government is in dialogue with both domestic and worldwide vaccine manufacturers". It is also on track to manufacture 500 million to one billion doses globally in 2021.

"We believe these data are strong and support mRNA-1273 as a best-in-class vaccine for COVID-19", analysts at Morgan Stanley commented.

Both vaccine frontrunners are based on a new platform called messenger RNA, which is faster to produce than traditional vaccines and effectively turn human cells into vaccine factories.

Moderna also said mRNA-1273 met a secondary endpoint analyzing severe cases of COVID-19, and including 11 severe cases as defined in the study protocol. "This positive interim analysis from our Phase 3 study has given us the first clinical validation that our vaccine can prevent Covid-19 disease, including severe disease", he said in a statement Monday.

In the study involving about 30 thousand people, each participant was given two shots, some placebo and some real. However, the government stressed the registry particularly needs volunteers who are most vulnerable to the effects of coronavirus, including frontline health and social care workers and people from Black, Asian and ethnic minority backgrounds. "About 43,000 people took part in tests", reports the BBC.

"We look forward to the next milestones of submitting for an EUA in the U.S., and regulatory filings in countries around the world, while we continue to collect data on the safety and efficacy of the vaccine in the COVE study", said Stéphane Bancel, Moderna's chief executive.

Many vaccines are needed both here in the United Kingdom, and globally, to ensure we can provide a safe and effective vaccine for the whole population.

This is another very promising sign for the potential of having effective vaccines available to the public in some kind of significant volume at some point next year.
