SpaceX Dragon capsule reaches International Space Station

SpaceX Dragon capsule reaches International Space Station”

Before receiving its flight certification from NASA last week, SpaceX's Crew Dragon had been under development for roughly a decade under a public-private NASA program started in 2011 to revive the agency's human spaceflight capability. You can enjoy that historic mission again with this photo gallery.

"By working together during these hard times, I have inspired the nation, the world and, in no small part, the name of this wonderful craft, Resilience", said Michael Hopkins, commander of the Crew-1 spacecraft, before the launch.

It was the final step on SpaceX's journey to being certified by NASA's Commercial Crew programme for regular flights carrying astronauts to the International Space Station.

Victor Glover on Sunday become the 1st Black astronaut to arrive at space station for long-term stay.

The crew's three Americans - Michael Hopkins, Victor Glover and Shannon Walker - along with Japan's Soichi Noguchi, each floated in zero gravity through a hatch and onto the ISS, where they were cheered and embraced by the station's three crew members.

"This is a new era of operational flights to the International Space Station from the Florida coast", Hopkins said upon docking.

After safety checks and a few hours of waiting, the crew will be welcomed aboard the station by the current crew. Crew 1 is NASA's first commercial system and first commercial spacecraft. Indeed, given how some private sector players-largely US-based-are already working on developing manned flight capabilities for the solar orbit, including interplanetary travel, India has a lot of catching up to do if it is to continue to flex the space muscle that Isro operations have developed for it.

Dmitry Rogozin, the head of Russia's space agency, has also repeatedly mocked SpaceX's technology, telling a state news agency he was unimpressed with the Crew Dragon's "rather rough" water landing and saying his agency was developing a methane rocket that can be reused 100 times.

The custom began on Russian spaceflights, dating back to the first-ever crewed mission. And so it is going to go, together with SpaceX - and finally Boeing - transporting astronauts to and from the channel for NASA.

The launch of Crew 1 is one of the biggest launches in modern history. Flying SpaceX, NASA will save about $ 25 million per seat. In 2011, NASA retired its space shuttle fleet and since then the U.S. relied entirely on Russian Soyuz rockets and spacecraft for astronaut transportation to and from the ISS. Late last night, the spacecraft successfully docked to the ISS.
