Twitter reacts as Lai Mohammed calls for sanction against CNN”

Minister for Information and Culture Lai Mohammed Thursday dismissed the CNN investigation as "fake news" and "misinformation", repeatedly denying the military used live rounds against protesters.

Saluting the musician's courage even though she reported being targeted by bullets, social media users posted photos of DJ Switch and thanked her for showing the world what really took place on the day of the massacre.

He added that the same can not be said of those that killed security personnel in a barbaric manner.

"Six soldiers and 37 policemen were killed all over the country during the crisis", Mohammed said.

The United Kingdom chapter of the Nigerians in Diaspora Monitoring Group, NDMG, has faulted the investigative report by the Cable News Network, CNN, on the Lekki toll gate shooting.

The minister noted that all they could see in their "biased view" of the whole situation was a "hoax massacre".

"This is irresponsible journalism for which CNN deserves to be sanctioned".

It is a month today since the October 20 Lekki tollgate shooting that changed the course of the nationwide #EndSARS protest against police brutality and end to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) outfit, reportedly infamous for terrorising, extorting money, and killing young Nigerians.

The minister also justified the sanctions imposed on three media organisations by the National Broadcasting Commission for allegedly using unverified and unsafe information from social media.

Mohammed insisted soldiers at the tollgate fired blank ammunition into the air which could not have done any damage.

"It is also imperative for the traditional media to authenticate information from social media before pushing such to the public".

That, he said, reinforced the government's campaign against fake news and disinformation, which was launched in 2018.

A statement by its spokesperson read, "our reporting was carefully and meticulously researched, and we stand by it".

"While the government has no plans to shut down the internet, it will work with stakeholders to regulate the social media to curb abuse".

According to the news outfit, video footage shows soldiers who appear to be shooting in the direction of demonstrators, and accounts from eyewitnesses established that after the army withdrew, a second round of shooting happened later in the evening. A Lagos State police spokesman declined to comment because of an ongoing investigation.

One would have expected that a government that is working to promote the welfare of the Nigerian people should be exceedingly happy that the CNN has helped us to expose the hidden information by the characters that unleashed violence on the people at the LEKKI Toll Gates Lagos on October 20th 2020.
