Edinson Cavani’s ‘offensive’ social media post to be investigated by FA

Edinson Cavani’s ‘offensive’ social media post to be investigated by FA”

Edinson Cavani apologised on Monday after his joy at scoring twice for Manchester United against Southampton was dampened by an investigation by the Football Association into a social media post he subsequently deleted.

Responding to the message, Cavani said: "Gracias negrito.' The Spanish term, which makes reference to race, translates directly as 'Thanks black".

"Negrito" was the term used by ex-Liverpool forward Luis Suarez - Cavani's friend and fellow Uruguay teammate - during a derby with United in 2011.

A posting, which appeared on Instagram, has been sent to the FA and they confirmed to Telegraph Sport that they were aware of a message which has since been deleted and that they would be looking into it.

The FA issues guidelines pre-season outlining racist and discriminatory language and behavior with offences on social media having a minimum three-match ban.

Edinson Cavani statement: "The message I posted after the game on Sunday was intended as an affectionate greeting to a friend, thanking him for his congratulations after the game".

"I am completely opposed to racism and deleted the message as soon as it was explained that it can be interpreted differently. The last thing I wanted to do was cause offence to anyone", Cavani said in a statement. "I want to sincerely apologize for all this", added the footballer, who arrived this season at Old Trafford from Paris Saint-Germain.

The Uruguayan, coming off the bench, scored two goals in the comeback that his team, Manchester United, led against Southampton in a Premier game played this Sunday (3-2).

The 33-year-old Uruguay global inspired United to a 3-2 comeback win at Southampton on Sunday, with two goals and an assist after coming off the bench at halftime.
