Japans ‘Twitter killer sentenced to death”

(MENAFN - Gulf Times) A Japanese man dubbed the "Twitter killer" was sentenced to death by a Tokyo court on Tuesday for murdering and dismembering nine people he met on the social media platform.

In the ruling, presiding Judge Naokuni Yano said none of the victims agreed to be killed and that Shiraishi was fully responsible for their deaths, according to media reports.

"None of the nine victims consented to be killed, including silent consent", the judge said, according to public broadcaster NHK.

Both the murderer and his lawyers argued that people who already wanted to die had their lives taken off, so the crime could not be compared to a normal murder.

He killed the women, including teenagers, after raping them.

"Even now, when I see a woman of my daughter's age, I mistake her for my daughter".

Nine dismembered bodies, with as many as 240 bone parts stashed in coolers and toolboxes, has been sprinkled with cat litter in a bid to hide the evidence.

His Twitter handle roughly translated as "hangman", and his bio described his expertise in the practice of hanging.

Prosecutors argued that some of the victims retracted statements that they wished to die and also mentioned that all the victims had resisted when Shiraishi tried to kill them. Shiraishi used this money to rent an apartment - and later confessed to murdering the woman there, reports NHK, a Japanese public news network.

Following the case, Twitter introduced warnings and links to support groups and charities anytime words related to suicide or self-harm are searched in Japan.

The woman's brother reported her disappearance to police the next day.

Shiraishi was found out only when the brother of the final victim hacked into her Twitter account and found the disturbing messages.

To ensure his victims would not back out at the last minute, he arranged to meet them at a train station near their homes before travelling together to his apartment.

His male victim was reportedly the boyfriend of one of his female victims, who he then murdered to prevent the killing being tied to him. He even made a statement to the court and said that the process was too long and he would welcome even the death penalty.

Criminals on Japan's death row are hanged to death, according to the BBC.

During his trial, Shiraishi's defense team claimed he deserved a lesser sentence because he helped the victims, who had wanted to die, commit suicide.

Over the next two months, Shiraishi went on to kill another seven women, aged between 15 and 26.

'They might have thought he was the only person who would sincerely listen to their problems, ' she said.

The judge added that Shiraishi was deceitful and targeted the victims who are "mentally fragile".

Takahiro Shiraishi was arrested in 2017 after officers found body parts in his apartment on an early-morning raid.
