According to preliminary data from app research firm Sensor Tower, $407.6 million was spent globally this past Christmas on apps purchased from the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store. Outside of mobile gaming, TikTok was the top app in terms of consumer spending, generating $ 4.7 million in revenue globally at Christmas.

In the past few months, Apple has been clamping down aggressively on apps that were listed on the App Store in China without a valid license from the Chinese government. Google Play on the other hand saw Dollars 129 million (RM520 million) in revenue. Earlier this year, Apple kicked out nearly 30,000 apps - most of which were games - from the App Store in China as they weren't approved by the National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA).

The US tech firm has previously said that it is subject to local rules but sometimes challenges takedown orders. As per 9to5Mac, the original deadline for obtaining the license for developers was the end of July 2020 and since many were still unable to do so, it was extended up to December 31. Overall, 2020 was a record year for global spending on mobile apps and games, surpassing $ 100 billion in just one year for the first time in November, combined with the App Store and Google Play Store. Apple's App Store captured the majority of spending between the two platforms, reaching 68.4% of total spending, or 278.6 million, a 35.2% year-on-year increase in Google Play revenue. for 129 million dollars, however, more than 33% annually.

Apple regularly publishes a tally of the number of apps it has been ordered to remove in the country, but does not name the products involved. The Chinese government has reportedly been pushing for Apple to close this loophole for a while now. This is reportedly the largest single-day purge of apps from the App Store.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
