Murder warrants issued for suspects in traffic stop death of Calgary officer”

A new year dawned in Calgary with the death of a veteran city police officer during a routine traffic stop and two young men in custody on charges of first-degree murder.

Harnett joined the service in 2008 and was promoted to Sergeant in 2019 after serving as a military police officer for over ten years.

Neufeld said Harnett was hit by the vehicle and dragged and that another vehicle was also struck and that driver remained at the scene and was helping with the investigation.

Al-Azan Shah MUHAMMAD, 17, and Amir ABDULRAHMAN, 19, both of Calgary, are sought in connection with the incident around 10:50 p.m., on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2020.

Police had earlier named the 17-year-old suspect, having made an application to the Youth Division of the Calgary provincial court.

Police say the vehicle is a copper-coloured, 2006 Infiniti FX, with a small spare tire on the front passenger side.

During a media availability on Friday, Calgary Police Chief Mark Neufeld said Harnett was a decorated officer who won at least two Chief's Awards for saving lives.

Neufeld said he knew Harnett personally and even worked a shift with him.

Calgary Police Association President John Orr said he is devastated by this loss. "But did so because he has a deep commitment to service in his community".

With the consent of the Harnett family, the Calgary Police Service was able to release the name of which of its members was killed on duty.

"His death reminds us of the very real risks taken by police officers every day to protect public safety", he said.

Premier Jason Kenney started a Friday news conference, saying his thoughts are with friends, family and colleagues of Harnett.

Neufeld praised the work Harnett did throughout his career, right up to the moment of his death.

Harnett also helped investigators identify the suspects before he died, the chief said, but gave few details.
