Pharmacist arrested, accused of ruining COVID vaccine doses”

Grafton police had said the hospital system contacted them Wednesday evening about "an employee tampering with vials of the Covid-19 vaccine". The employee in question reportedly removed 57 vials - each containing ten doses - from the refrigeration unit where they were being kept and did not replace them.

"Based on information available, (we) determined that the vaccine was still able to be administered on the morning of December 26, given the 12-hour period of viability after removal of refrigeration", Bahr said.

Hospital officials are partnering with Moderna and the US Food and Drug Administration to figure out a strategy for those who received the 57 doses.

'The 57 have been notified, ' said Bahr.

Police in Grafton, about 32 kilometers north of Milwaukee, said in a statement that the department, Federal Bureau of Investigation and Food and Drug Administration are "actively" investigating.

The vaccine can last up to 12 hours out of a refrigerator, according to Moderna.

Dr. Jeff Bahr, president of the Aurora Health Care Medical Group, said that the worker had been fired, and added that some were administrated with the jab before it became clear that it had been spoiled. Governors in both red and blue states have been angry at Washington for not sending them the doses of vaccine they were promised - sometimes hundreds of thousands of fewer doses.

Reluctance to take the vaccine has even been expressed by some healthcare workers who are among those designated as first in line to receive them.

"Moderna reassured us there are no safety concerns with administering a vaccine that has been out of the fridge too long".

Grafton, Wis., Police Department officials said the former pharmacist admitted he removed the vials of the Moderna vaccine from refrigeration to render them useless. "We are more than disappointed that this individual's actions will result in a delay of more than 500 people receiving their vaccine", the statement said.

- When the misplaced vials were found on December 26th, the pharmacist said it was an inadvertent error, but hospital officials said he admitted on Wednesday to intentionally removing the vaccine from cold storage. The CBIC, in a letter to field offices, said since multiple stakeholders will be involved in the process of clearance of the vaccines, effective coordination among the stakeholders would be necessary.

The number of Covid-19 cases in Wisconsin has been rising in recent days after dipping in early December.

The state Department of Health Services reported 3,810 newly confirmed cases on Thursday, marking the third straight day of rising daily infections. The survival rate remained unchanged at 99 percent.
