Senators in final bid to derail certification of Biden's victory”

The US Electoral College - which confirmed November's presidential election result by awarding points for each state won by the two White House rivals - last month cemented Mr Biden's victory over Mr Trump by 306-232.

"We are not naive".

In a joint statement the senators said: "We do not take this action lightly".

The House and Senate are due to meet on Wednesday to certify these results, a procedure that is usually a mere formality.

This campaign has failed completely in the courts, which have refused to examine the evidence Republicans say they have.

A federal appeals court on Saturday (Jan 2) rejected a Republican congressman's bid to allow Vice President Mike Pence to overturn President-elect Joe Biden's Nov 3 election victory in favour of President Donald Trump. This last-ditch attempt follows repeated failures by supporters of Donald Trump in court to invalidate the election results in several key states where Joe Biden has won.

According to CNN, in the Chamber of Deputies (PICSA), with a democratic majority, more than a hundred Republicans want to vote for certification. Josh Hawley (R., Mo.) said he would join Rep. Mo Brooks (R., Ala.) and some other Republican House members to file a formal objection to the 2020 Electoral College results in Wednesday's joint session of Congress.

Among the Republicans who disapprove of their initiative is Pat Toomey, a senator from Pennsylvania, one of the states whose outcome should be challenged in Congress. "Hawley, Cruz, and others to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in swing states like Pennsylvania directly undermines this right".

The senators voted one by one and it became clear Friday afternoon local time that enough senators would vote against the presidential veto.

He added: "I voted for President Trump and endorsed him for re-election".

Mr Biden's transition team did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Mr Trump has been encouraging Republicans to prevent Mr Biden from taking office, although there is no viable mechanism for them to do so.

Senate GOP aides describe vast pressure on members, who are being inundated by phone calls and emails from Trump supporters and donors, as well as entreaties from local Republican parties and organizations, to overturn the election results.

Top Republicans have said the Senate's role in certifying the election is largely ceremonial and should not be an opportunity for further lengthy debate about the result.

A Republican member of the House of Representatives, Louie Gohmert, has also announced his plan to oppose certification, and more than 100 House Republicans reportedly will back his challenge. She said Saturday she planned to vote to ratify Mr. Biden's win.
