Sudbury records seven new cases of COVID-19”

The province's daily COVID-19 case count recently pushed past the 3,000 mark - and the numbers are continuing to climb.

That pushes the seven-day average of daily new cases to 2,655, which is also a record.

Just over half of the new cases reported Saturday were in the Greater Toronto area: there were 713 cases in Peel, 700 cases in Toronto and 395 cases in York region.

There were an addition 2,476 cases of COVID-19 reported on January 1, 2021. There are 1,003 hospitalizations in Ontario, with 322 patients in intensive care units, and 220 people on ventilators.

Chief medical officer of health Dr. Jennifer Russell says the spike in new cases is concerning, but public health suspects a number of the new cases are connected.

Manitoba officials are reporting 11 deaths from COVID-19 over the past two days.

In Thunder Bay there have been 19 deaths, the bulk of the COVID-19 deaths at the Southbridge Roseview Long-Term Care facility.

However, they said this is the third day in a row there have been no new residents or staff who have tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

The disclosures came as Alberta's chief medical officer of health tweeted Saturday that there were an estimated 900 new COVID-19 cases recorded in the province on New Year's Day.

With two cases previously reported at the school, the latest numbers bring the total known infections there to seven.

Two Atlantic provinces, meanwhile, reported double-digit increases in COVID-19 cases.

Health Sciences North has one admitted patient with the virus.
