United Kingdom decision to mix Covid-19 vaccines raises concern

United Kingdom decision to mix Covid-19 vaccines raises concern”

Pfizer Inc and its partner BioNTech Se plan to give volunteers who received a placebo in its COVID-19 vaccine trial an option to receive a first dose of the vaccine by March 1, 2021, while staying within the study. It's a two dose vaccine.

The new guidance contradicts guidelines in the United States, where the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has noted that the authorized COVID-19 vaccines "are not interchangeable", and that "the safety and efficacy of a mixed-product series have not been evaluated".

Dr Sahin said the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, which uses messenger RNA to instruct the human immune system to fight the coronavirus, should be able to cope with a variant first detected in Britain that seems to be more contagious.

But John Moore, a vaccine expert at Cornell University, wants more evidence that the strategy can really work before it is recommended.

"Of note, more people experienced these side effects after the second dose than after the first dose, so it is important for vaccination providers and recipients to expect that there may be some side effects after either dose, but even more so after the second dose", the FDA said on its website.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has approved the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine for emergency use, paving the way for it to be distributed to countries in need.

COVID-19 has killed more than 74,000 people in Britain. Hospitals continue to strain under a crush of coronavirus patients, and tens of thousands of new infections are reported each day.

It is the first vaccine to be added to the United Nations organisations' Emergency Use Listing (EUL). "None of this is being data driven right now".

Although there is no evidence that taking two different Covid-19 vaccine shots works, the British government suggested people may mix and match their shots in its guidelines on the Covid-19 vaccine updated on New Year's Eve, according to Business Insider. Still, it's not without precedent: Health authorities like the CDC have previously said that if it's impossible to give doses of a vaccine from the same manufacturer, "providers should administer the vaccine that they have available" to complete an injection schedule.

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine received FDA Emergency Use Authorization on December 11.

Both vaccines are meant to be doled out in two-shot regimens, delivered three or four weeks apart. A vaccine from the U.S. biotech firm Moderna will also be included if it receives approval. Only people who previously had severe allergic reactions to vaccines or ingredients in this particular vaccine should not get the shot.
